Our custom home building process
How We Build Your Custom Home
From finding the right lot to the final walkthrough, here is how we take a custom home in Asheville and Western North Carolina step by step.
Building a home should be enjoyable
Finding land, designing a home and balancing a budget can be daunting. Our goal is simple: a home-building experience you enjoy from start to finish.
Step by step
Five Steps, One Family
Land first, then a design that fits it. You work directly with Kenny, Chance and Nickie the whole way: if you hire us, you get us.
Step 1: Land first
We help you find the right lot, or walk the one you have. Kenny looks at the topography, views, sunrise and sunset, and the site costs: foundation, driveway, septic and well.
Step 2: Design that fits the lot
Kenny designs the home around the site rather than forcing a plan onto it. Smart design is where you save money. We can also build from any accurate set of prints.
Step 3: Budget & contract
Budgets, allowances and change orders are all handled in the contract, and we go through them in detail once you decide to move forward.
Step 4: Building, with the family
You work directly with Kenny, Chance and Nickie throughout. The schedule depends heavily on the topography and the site, so we plan it for your lot.

Questions
Process Questions
Including the one everyone asks: what does it cost to build in Asheville?
Do I need land or plans first?
Land first, ideally. The lot shapes the design: its slope, views and light, and what the site work will cost. If you don’t have land yet, we can help you find it. Kenny and Nickie are licensed North Carolina real estate brokers.
Can you help me find land?
Yes. We help clients find the right lot, whether that means a view or lake frontage, and we evaluate it with you before you buy so the foundation, driveway, septic and well costs are not a surprise.
What happens at the first meeting?
We’re happy to talk this through at your consultation.
How do you work with architects?
After understanding our client’s needs, we recommend a few different architects who we feel are a good fit. Once chosen, we all work as a team to make sure that whatever is designed, can be built within budget.
How do budgets work?
Budgets, allowances and change orders are handled in the contract. We go through them in detail once you decide to move forward.
What does it cost to build a custom home in Asheville?
It depends on the home and, just as much, on the site. Land and site costs vary a lot from lot to lot: foundation, driveway, septic and well can add up to more than you expect, sometimes more than the lot itself. That is why we look at the land with you before design.
How long does a custom home take?
It depends heavily on the topography and the site, so we don’t quote an average. Once we have walked your lot, we plan the schedule around it.
Who will I talk to during construction?
Us. We are a small family company: you work directly with Kenny Cryderman (general contractor), Chance Cryderman (project manager) and Nickie Cryderman (office manager). If you hire us, you get us.
How are changes handled once construction starts?
Change orders are covered in the contract, and we go through how they work before construction starts.
Is there a warranty on a new home?
Yes. Every new home has the one-year North Carolina statutory warranty, and extended coverage can be discussed.
